Bringing your A-game to work every single day is quite exhausting, at least for me. Waking up early, getting to work on time, surviving the morning traffic jam, socialising with my colleagues and doing my best for the next eight hours takes a toll on me physically, mentally and emotionally.
The biggest problem was the everyday habits that defined me, determined my schedule and were responsible for my time management and productivity. I wanted to stop struggling with my performance, so I changed a few habits and managed to improve my work productivity. Here are some tips on how you can do the same.
The to-do list:
Creating a to-do list is one of the best ideas out there and something that definitely enhanced my organisational skills, especially since I forget things quite easily. It guides me through busy days, helps me to stay on top of all my errands and makes me more productive and efficient than I used to be. People have been using to-do lists for quite some time now and being able to create one is a skill I was so happy to master.
Waking up on time:
Arriving at work just in the nick of time every day used to exhaust me and brought another negative side-effect – my superiors began perceiving me as a bad employee. Being late made me irresponsible, inefficient and unproductive as I was tired all day long and never able to do my best. However, waking up on time and arriving to work fifteen minutes before everyone else made all the difference.
Now, I’m able to start my day in an empty office instead of being surrounded by a noisy crowd and actually manage to plan my day peacefully. Moreover, I’m certainly more productive and can accomplish more by the end of the day. In the end, I strongly believe my bosses started noticing my commitment, so I think I might expect a raise in the future!
A new perspective:
You can never know what will change your perspective and make you perceive work productivity differently. People often see a movie or TV show featuring extraordinary employees and get inspired to perform better at work. I know I felt that way when I saw Limitless as it literally changed the way I looked at productivity and inspiration. Thanks to its amazing portrayal of the inspirational NZT-48 pill, I started thinking about my cognitive abilities and the way I can enhance them. And everyone who’s ever had a similar experience already knows how much movies can change you and make you maximize your potential and work productivity.
Whenever I had lots of work that needed to be completed urgently, I’d instinctively start multitasking, not knowing how dangerous that process actually is. Trying to do a number of things at the same time always made me less concentrated on each of them because I was constantly checking the time and speeding up the process. It’s not that I was unable to do these things individually – after all, I did perform all of these activities every day anyways – but not simultaneously! Instead, I learned how to take a break, evaluate my time, slow things down and go one step at a time. That way, I now manage to complete every task I have instead of losing my mind in the process.
No more procrastinating:
Procrastinating might easily be the biggest problem I was facing all my life. I always thought there was plenty of time left and that the deadlines weren’t that close, yet they usually were. I don’t think handling my responsibilities improperly necessarily made me a bad person but, honestly, it did mean I was a bad employee, and my superiors didn’t appreciate such behaviour. That’s precisely why I wanted to learn how to stop procrastinating and find a way to be more effective, and I ultimately managed to do so – at least I think I did!
Changing your behaviour overnight is impossible and making huge changes at once is hard, but tweaking a few things over a course of time makes much more sense. Changing these everyday habits make me start seeing my work with fresh eyes and the new perspective I got made my much more productive than I ever was.
