How To Practice Self-Care

As a lifestyle and mental health blogger, I have learnt a lot about the importance of self care over the past few years. So, what is self-care? Well, self-care is any activity that has a positive impact on your physical, emotional or mental health. If you don’t allow yourself the time to have practice self-care and love, you’ll be more prone to stress, as well as being more at risk of suffering from emotional or mental health issues in the long run.

There are a variety of different activities that you could do which would allow you to have self-care time. Here are some of my top suggestions!

Reading:

As a literature enthusiast, a good book and a lovely hot chocolate always helps me to relax!

Meditation and yoga:

Many of you have probably heard a large amount about meditation and yoga. Both help you to gain more emotional control over your mind, change your brain structure, help your creativity and obviously help fight mental health issues. There are also studies into meditation and yoga helping people become more compassionate and sharpen concentration!

Take a warm bath:

Not only will it relax your muscles, but it will allow you to have some quiet time to yourself.

Have technology free time:

Sometimes it is good to escape from the world of technology and social media as it can be quite stressful and intense. It will allow you to do other activities without distractions so have a couple of hours, or even a day or so, away from it all.

Listen or sing along to music:

It does not matter who you are or what your interests are, everyone loves a bit of music in their life – I know I absolutely adore it. Music allows you to express yourself and connect with your feelings. Sometimes our feelings need to be heard for us to move on from stressful times in our lives. As spoken by Plato, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.”

Tidy:

Sometimes when we physically tidy, we de-clutter our mind as well as our rooms. Try it out, it can be therapeutic!

Cook:

For those who are cooking enthusiasts, cooking can be a great way to give yourself self-care as it will allow you the chance to take our mind off other things and do something practical at the same time.

Retail therapy:

You simply cannot beat a bit of retail therapy. It allows you to refresh yourself and have a good ol’ day out!

Swimming:

Going for a swim is probably one of the most therapeutic sports that you could go and do. You are doing exercise, as well as doing great things for your body and your mind.

Go for a long walk:

Nowadays, we do not appreciate nature and all its beautiful aspects enough. Go for a walk and enjoy what nature has to offer. It allows you to have a change of scenery and give yourself a positive perception of life.

Get involved with your community:

There is always a chance to make friends and learn new skills. Not only will it do you good to meet new people, but it will help you learn new skills and learn something new!

Catch up with friends/family:

It is important to have catch ups with people. Not only will it make you feel good, but it shall also have a positive impact on others.

Do something kind for other people:

This links well with the above suggestion. I always feel much better after I help someone out/ do something kind. Sharing kindness, love and peace has a positive impact on everyone and will spread on. I hope this post has been of help to you all- It is okay to give yourself self help and love. It is all well and good looking after other people, but please make sure that you look after yourself and give yourself time to refresh!

    Yes to all of these!

  • Love your choices here. Totally agree with the swimming part, so true! And I always find it interesting how time passes when you are reading, you slow down somehow.
This kind of ties into the article I wrote on the fact that time can feel different — and that I’d like to experience this more fully: http://effcaa.com/timeless-time-vertical-horizontal-observation/

    Have a good day! 🙂
